"My group was the FIAM project (Fundacao Institutuo de Administracao Municipal /Estado Pernambuco). We arrived March 5, 1972 and spent about 4/5 weeks before we went to Recife to finish our training. Our group was small, about 18, and I have had little contact with other members. I have emails from James Malueg (now lives in Fortaleza) who works in Wisconsin and married one of our trainers, Rita do Vale. Some other names were John Ulmer (worked in Limoeiro, PE), Dave Greene, Alan Ruderman, Gregg Smith and Randy Riddell. I can try to piece together our group if you are interested. As our program fell apart in September/October, we were given option to stay in Brazil, return, go elsewhere etc. I was offered a program with IDIES, Instituto Desenvolvimento Industrial de Espírito Santo, and moved to Vitória in December, 1972. I worked for IDIES until June 1974." "At the same time we were in Belo Horizonte, Peace Corps brought in another group destined for community development/medical support in Paraíba/Rio Grande do Norte. They came in about mid March. Their group was much larger. I have only kept up with one member, Kathy Donovan. She ended up working at Chase Manhattan, became a friend with my wife and I, and we all lived in Rio at the same time in the late 1970's. Kathy is in California. One of my friends who is ex Chase has some contact with Kathy periodically." William Whitaker ES 72-74 January 2004 |
