PCVs of BR 29 Chicago June 23, 1966

Brazil 29 began training June 23,1966 and ended on Sept. 17.

Thirty-six trainees started out and thirty-two were selected. We trained for six weeks in Chicago's near West Side (Garfield Park) where we lived in tenement housing and were the only white folks for bocks and blocks. After six weeks all the trainees were moved to the campus of Loyola University where we lived in a dormitory for Jesuit priests.

Volunteers were posted in several states in Northeast Brazil including Bahia, Sergipe, Pernambuco, as well as to Mato Grosso, Amazonas, Alagoas and Espírito Santo. Training was for rural health and community development. Most trainees wanted to stay the entire 12 weeks in Garfield Park but staff thought it necessary, for safety reasons, to move group to Loyola University.
