I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Brazil from the Brazil Health Project which trained at NYU, September 1 - November 22, 1964. The Project Director at NYU was Raymond Wilburn and the in-country director was Ralph Gut. I was a brand new nurse when I went into the Peace Corps in 1964. When I arrived in Alagoinhas, Bahia, my first job was distributing Food for Peace milk with another volunteer, Sally Danielson. Then I started working in the regional hospital there. A pediatric wing was opened and I worked there. I apprenticed myself to some local midwives and assisted in home births. These midwives were excellent practitioners and I'll never forget their teachings. I lived with 3 different families. And it is the reconnection by one of the family members recently through the internet that my memories "do Brazil e Os Voluntarios da Paz" are flooding my mind! I felt even then that I benefited the most and it was one of my greatest privileges. I hope others from this group will find this website and reconnect. Saudades. We arrived in Brazil in December, 1964 and left in August, 1966. I was stationed in Alagoinhas, Bahia and worked as a nurse there. I did find another person from our group on the Peace Corps Online website that states his training was at NYU. His name is Jim Rose. I hope that our group will be counted among those listed. It was a great group of people. If I can supply any more info, please contact me. I have just been contacted by the son of a former family I lived with through the internet and am scrambling to get my Portuguese back! That contact got me surfing the internet for info on Brazil and the Peace Corps. That is how I came upon this web site. I'm grateful that there is so much information. Marjorie Noonsong April 2007 |
