Dear Gene, Thank you for the Ex Peace Corps site. You asked about the dates of my training and my service. It is true that I trained at the U of Texas in 1965 as well as 1966. This was an experimental program that they called at the time a Junior Year Program. We began training well in between our junior and senior years, resumed it at Christmas break and then resumed it again in Brazil itself under the auspices of UofT after graduation. So I trained in 65 and 66 and began work at Timbaubape,
Pernambuco in July or August of 66.
I am thinking it was probably August. I took over the work of Nancy Scheper-Hughes and she is now a very well known anthropologist and even wrote a book on Timbaubape and the cultural construct of motherhood. I never budged from Timbaubape, but I counted at one time that about 13 Peace Corps volunteers came and went from that town in the time I was there! Two of them, Michael Doyle and Mike Royster, are on your list. Doyle married the cousin of my ex wife.
I was in Goiania about a month ago. I was doing training for priests and laity of the Anglican Church Diocese of Brasilia. In Goiania, I visited the Movimento sem Teto camp and the new housing development. Again, thanks for your web and the work it must take to maintain it. Regards,
Dan Hoffman
