The Brasil 8 Group began training in Milwaukee in March 1964. We arrived in Recife in June and I spent my 22nd birthday on the bus with the Alagoas group traveling to Maceió.

I would love to get in touch with my training group. I know that two members are deceased - Ron Foltz and Joyce DeMille.  Ron died in a car accident a few years after returning from Peace Corps.  Joyce became a doctor, returned to Brazil and worked in the favelas of Salvador, Bahia.  She died of cancer in the late '80's or early 90's.  I married Tom Ventre who was a volunteer in Espírito Santo.  We have 3 children and six grandchildren.  Our younger son just finished Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic.

I am in touch with the Brazil 7 group and go to their reunions because many of us were together in the 4-S project.  I also am part of the yearly newsletter of the group that came to Minas to work on Clubes Agricolas in 1965 or 66.  John Sullivan and I were the Volunteer leaders for that group when they arrived and we helped set up the project.

Que Saudades!

Most of the members of my training group went to communities in northeastern and coastal Brazil. Klaas Schenk and I were the only volunteers sent to Rio.

I've been hoping for years that Peace Corps would somehow make it easier to contact RPCVs that I'd lost contact with. So I really appreciate what this organization has done.

Check out a new book about Northeast Brazil. It is The Seamstress by Frances de Pontes Peebles, Harper, 2008. A novel based on history and folklore we all knew.
