PC was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I never returned to Brasil after I left the PC. But when I retire it's high on my list of priorities. I'd love to see my PC friends, so if you are going to visit Oregon, please let me know and we can get together and have a beer!
I returned to ES in 1999 and found that in Santa Maria de Jeteba (formerly part of Santa Leopoldina) that the program was still operating. In fact it had received national recognition. It was still utilizing the community involvement and school garden model established in 1964.

The greatest experience I ever had. We need another reunion. The one in Washington was so interesting. Who would like to have another? I am retired, living in Dallas and playing tennis on several teams.
If any of you ever come through here, Please let me know!
Having been a PCV certainly comes back to visit you in many ways...whether it be the adoption of my two children (now in college), interfacing with visiting Brazilians to my whole foods market location, or talking to co-workers in Portuguese...it has still been a great and rewarding experience.

I worked in Brazil twice during my career at the World Bank: 1973-74 and 1986-89. I have a godson there and keep in touch with my compadres and other friends. Sentirei-me realizado no dia no qual os Estados Unidos ganhar um jogo de futebol sobre o Brasil no Copo do Mundo....

After ES studied in Spain. Then was U.S.I.A. officer for six years. Went on to grad school, M.A., PhD. Have been teaching Portuguese at community colleges.
Stayed in Brazil following PC with Johnson Wax. Over 33 years I had assignments in Brazil(2), Venezuela, area director for SA, Russia, and Japan. Now retired on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Looking for other RPCV's from Espirito Santo and Goias... Any one know the whereabouts of Julie Derry, Margaret Johnson, Preston Terrell??? Anyone coming to the beach...let me know...lots of room
Actually, I commute. My wife, Keta, and two boys, Frederico and Erik, are in São José do Calçado, ES. I work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. I have a daughter, Yedda, here with me. I look forward to a beachside apartment in Guarapari with Internet access. And cheap beer.
Originally assigned to assist in establishing a hospital maintenance program. Project never developed as intended. Found another assignment working with the street children.

I am currently working for a month as a volunteer MD at the excellent NGO the Fundação Esperança in Santarem, Brasil. This is my second time here. I am on their stateside board of directors 3AO. My Brazilian e-mail address until Feb 2, 2003 fesperan@alternex.com.br. I was also PCV staff in Espirito Santo from 67-70. I would enjoy hearing from former PCV´s.
We trained the summer before our senior year in college at Sacramento State then completed several weeks of in-country training in Brazil after graduation.

It was a very successful experience for me. I made many good friends, met my husband, and completed several projects including implementing the delivery of commodities to the rural schools in the area, the building of six rural schools, opening a health post in a neighboring village, and starting a domestic arts school for young girls.
I stayed an additional two years in Vitoria teaching English and that I also taught English during my Peace Corps service.
After finally leaving Brasil in 1970, I became involved in many US and international family planning organizations and served on the Boards of some great ones. To earn a living I've worked in the computer business for 25 years as a technology scout for John Hancock, evangelist for Apple and Adobe, and founder of several start ups. I'm now in real estate in Silicon Valley and having a ball.
I read with interest Bruce Sandie's report that the school lunch program in Santa Maria de Jetiba is still operating. My then husband Willie Scheuerer (we were newly married) replaced Bruce in 1964 and with the wonderful support of the Directora of the school, Dona Gerda Potratz, established the school lunch program. The first couple of months we made the milk daily for the students but then took a vacation so the janitor for the school would take over. It's gratifying to know that the program is still operating.

Mar 06 - I was surprised an facinated when I found these pages. I remember Brazilians asking me if I knew so and so or so and so and now am seeing those names as volunteers who preceded us in ES & MG. And, unfortunately, there are names that I remember and just can't put faces to. Randy Chase and I are brothers-in-law, having married sisters (Isa and Ida respectively) from Vitoria. We also travel back routinely so our two boys can visit their grandfather and are planning a trip this coming July. I'm still in service as CEO of a health center serving and caring for migrant and seasonal farmowrkers in WI. I'll never forgot the 20th Peace Corps celebration in Washington when Sg. Shriver addressed us and implored people to "...Serve, Serve, Serve." I like to think we are all doing that in our own way.
After returning from Brazil in late 67 due to asthma, I ventured back twice, once as a tourist and the last time, 73-75 as director of a residential/educational program for dependents of Ford Brasil, S.A. in Sao Paulo. Have been in private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist for 17 years in Atlanta and am married to a true Georgia Peach!
The Peace Corps can shape your life. After ES, I ended up marrying a Brazilian, doing university teaching in Recife, then settling in Rio and being a Portuguese/English simultaneous interpreter.
I found the site by luck. I was a Volunteer in Brazil from March 1972 to May 1974. After training, I served 6 months in Salgueiro, Pernambuco (Municipal Admin. Program). I transferred to IDEIES program/Vitória, ES in Dec 1972. My wife is from Vitória and we visit regularly.
