During PC: Hi
Gene,
"We were in Jatai for a year. (We were there when they got lights.)
We then moved to São Paulo. I am an
Occupational Therapist and worked in a rehabilitation center
starting a pediatric program. Barry worked with a social
worker and a retired military police general with prevocational
classes for boys "at risk".
I hope you hear from others in our group. Karen"
Everyone in our group remembers the radishes--many many radishes.
Our trainers suggested that to get the children involved in our
Clubes Agricolas gardens, radishes were a good first crop as they
mature quickly. Well, when the boys took the radishes home they were
back at our door 15 minutes later because their mothers wanted
recipes for the radishes. We sent out an SOS but no volunteers ate
radishes any way other than raw, I guess. We found a couple of
recipes in Fannie Farmer. When we asked later how the radishes
turned out they answered that they had sold them to the other
Americans in Jatai. Shortly after we moved to Sao Paulo and worked
in social services and rehabilitation.
After PC:
We now grow flowers instead of radishes in Minnesota where we moved
"temporarily" after Peace Corps. Our two daughters are grown. Barry
is the City Administrator in our town and Karen is splitting her
school roles between Occupational Therapy and School Psychology. We
have hosted the children of our "Host Country National Counterpart"
as Foriegn Exchange Students and keep in touch with some things
Brazilian through friends in the Twin Cities Brazilian community.
