Larry Liberty RJ 68-70

submitted: July 2000

It has been a long time and now with the site, I have the chance to complete a part of my most educational life experience. My name is Larry Liberty and I trained for Brazil in Brattleboro Vermont in Sept-Dec, 1968. I was trained with 80 other mostly shocked souls from various universities and other settings. We left NYC for Rio and on the flight down they asked for ten volunteers to go to a place other than Belo Horizonte where we had been originally designated. I raised my hand along with several of my new friends and found myself in the State of Rio. Dropped in a small town (Sapucaia). I spent most of eight months getting acculturated, being lonely, looking for UFO's, contemplating the mating habits with the local women, and wondering what I had gotten myself into. I made many wonderful friends during the training and in that first year. Sadly, due to a health problem with my step-father I had to make an emergency return to the states and never returned to Brazil.

It is my fondest hope to connect with some of the people I trained and worked with, people who made an enormous difference in my life and in my future. Today I am a successful businessperson living in Sacramento California. I have a Ph.D. in organizational psychology and have an international management consulting practice. I never fail to use the learning's of my experiences in Brazil in my work. If anyone is connected to that time or place I would welcome the opportunity to revisit that extraordinary part of our lives.

With great appreciation for a life altering experience

Larry Liberty
