Gary's visit to Brazil Nov 01

Submitted by:  Gary Duncan ES 67-70

Opa Gente,

Just returned last night from a week in Brazil.  What terrific changes I saw in Rio and Salvador.  Bigger, better, and maravilhosa! Best of all (for all of you ex-PCV's from E.S.), I had dinner in Rio with Art Powers (Linhares) and wife, Richard "Mad Dog" Karol (Baixa Guando and Pancas) and wife, Paulo Roberto Guimaraes and wife (Dir of PC in ES), and Dina (former PC/Blue Knob, PA, Portuguese instructor). Gente, que boa! It had been 30 (THIRTY!) years since I had seen them!!! Ja pensou!  They are still wonderful people and we had a great time that night.  Chuck Lyndaker (ES) was suppose to join us, but could not because of other obligations with his work in Rio.

Lots of stories to relate to all of you ES/PCV's later.  I wanted to visit Gene on my trip to the Bahia region, but VARIG wanted to show me their new hotels and resorts in Salvador, Praia do Forte, and Saugipe--approximately 80 km. north of Salvador. Since they were paying most of my bills, I could not deviate from their schedule. Lots of saudades mesmo!!!!!

Yes, although I stayed at the Carlton Rio Atlantica in Copacabana, I had to go by minha casa de fora, the infamous Hotel Florida, which has been completely remodeled! Puxa gente, you can not believe the changes that have occurred in nossa Brasil. It was a wonderful trip!!!
