As a PC volunteer in 1967...perhaps I can add a little bit of info...Our
Doctor was Dr. Barry Gewertz...There were a number of us in São Laurneco
da Mata. There were several of us involved in a Schistosomiasis control
programs spread throughout Brasil. The program ran out of money less
than 1/2 way through so many volunteers elected to leave and many stayed.
In 1968 many men were drafted. I lead a delegation from the
Northeast that gathered in Rio and held a press conference where we told
reporters about the drafting of most men in country at that time. Of
course we caught a lot of crap from Washington (indeed, I was flown down
to Rio the week following to be called on the carpet...just another few
days in Rio was my opinion)...I fired off a letter to the editor of US
News & World Report. It was not published, but I received a personal
response form the editor with whom I carried on a correspondence for
about 5 years about the war. We never agreed on the justification or
rationale, but did conclude that the best solution was to declare a
victory and leave (which we did far too many years later)...
